Health advice for travellers going to areas with local transmission of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)

Regarding the World Health Organization press release concerning an outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome with Atypical Pneumonia we inform that:

Taking into account developments in the situation and the fact that there are still unknown factors, the Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs recommends not to travel to affected areas with known local transmission of the disease. The following general preventive measures are recommended:

  • Good personal hygiene, washing your hands after sneezing, coughing or wiping your nose.

  • Ventilate closed areas well.

  • Avoid crowded poorly ventilated places.

  • Have handkerchiefs and tissues available to use when necessary, and dispose of them properly.

  • Eat sensibly, take regular exercise, adequate rest, reduce stress and don't smoke.

  • In the case of children, it is important that:

    • their toys are kept very clean.

    • they cover their nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing.

    • keep their hands clean.

    • use liquid soap to wash their hands and dry them with disposable towels.

  • Seek immediate medical attention if you develop any symptoms that indicate a respiratory tract infection (high temperature over 38º C, cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing).
