GENDER VIOLENCE 2006 REPORT

Through this document the National Health System (NHS) intends to honour the commitment to issuing an Annual Report on the state of the Gender violence problem and the healthcare responses it is given. This 2006 Report on healthcare attention to gender violence within the NHS we now present, spans the 18-month period between June 30, 2005 and December 21, 2006. It is meant to be a compilation of all actions undertaken by Autonomous Communities within Spanish Territory in terms of comprehensive attention to gender violence, aiming at making data and views on the National Health Systems activities relating to gender violence, available for the Health Sector and the whole Society. The Report includes a specific chapter where Laws regulating this matter are compared in the International sphere, regarding presence of the Health Sector and its professionals.

That violence inflicted on women by their partners has caused in Spain 484 women deaths in 9 years (1998-2006). Women estimated to have suffered maltreatment in Spain in the same period amount to 360,830.

On this issue there exists an indicator proposed by the United Nations, named the Gender-related Development Index (GDI) which broadly speaking measures the population’s average progress in terms of equality between men and women.

According to the resulting trend the problem arises at stages in women lives when they should have access to opportunities for acquiring higher education, a paid job or working promotion opportunities. Hence abusive male conducts might be a way to keep their female partners in a subordinate position both socially and concerning their couple relationship.

Aside from assessing the problem significance when related to age of women enduring maltreatment, other studies point at women immigrants as an especially vulnerable group facing gender violence.
