GENDER VIOLENCE 2007 REPORT

The now presented 2007 annual report on healthcare response to gender violence in the National Health System (NHS), is the third this Commission has drafted. 

A summary is also presented of programmes and actions performed by health services in cooperation with relevant departments in order for awareness of their professionals to be fostered and their specific training to be developed both in primary and specialised care this including their respective casualty departments. 

In 2007, The Common Protocol for at Healthcare response to Gender Violence was presented, establishing a standardized and homogeneous action guideline for the National Health System (NHS). 

The year this report spans, the National Plan for Awareness and Prevention of Gender Violence for all citizens was approved. It settles a key role for the public administrations: "The violence is the extreme manifestation of inequality, the evidence of a democratic deficit and one of the symptoms of incomplete citizenship of women. In the area of the couple, the magnitude of the phenomenon of violence on a daily question the fundamental rights of citizenship for many women the right to life, their physical and mental integrity, their health, their dignity and freedom, which are the inviolable personal values on which our democracy is founded".

Also was published and Organic Act 3/2007, 22 March was enacted for effective equality of women and men, two landmarks in the advance towards equality and wiping out gender violence. The latter contains a section specifically devoted to health, where it is established that “violence inflicted on women primarily constitutes an attack on their physical and psychological health; hence, the health sector-related agents take on special significance when it comes to both the phenomenon detection and the care for the victims”.
